Happy Spring! April News

Happy spring everyone! Hopefully we have seen the end of the snow but somehow I don't think we we will be quite so lucky. Please remember that your child needs a pair of indoor shoes at school and a pair of running shoes for gym. Especially as the rain rolls in during the months of April and May.

Here is some of what is coming up in April.

Mabels Fables - Book Fair - April 3-6th

On Wednesday April 4th the children will be invited to the library to browse a selection of books they may like to purchase.  They will be given a sheet of paper to fill out book titles and prices. There will be volunteers in the library to help with that.  The children will bring home their wish lists and return it on Friday April 6th to do some buying of books. As always, this is completely optional.

International Day of Pink

International Day of Pink - Wednesday, April 11, 2018

April 11, 2018 marks the International Day of Pink. It is a day where communities across the country, and across the world, can unite in celebrating diversity and raising awareness to stop all forms of bullying.

The International Day of Pink was started in Nova Scotia when two straight high school students saw a gay student wearing a pink shirt being bullied. The two students intervened, but wanted to do more to prevent homophobic bullying. They decided to purchase pink shirts, and a few days later got everyone at school to arrive wearing pink, standing in solidarity. The result was that an entire school took a stand and began working together to prevent homophobic bullying.

The message was clear: anyone can bully, any can be victimized by bullying, but together we can stop it.

Each year on the second Wednesday of April, millions of people wear pink and take a stand. The Day of Pink is a symbol, a spark, that empowers and inspires youth across Canada to create amazing social change!

LKS … next Wednesday, April 11, 2018 please wear PINK!!

Class Trip

Tuesday April 24th
- Our class will be joining Mrs. Zappi's class on a trip to the Etobicoke Field Studies Centre. The cost of the trip will be $7.50.  I will be sending home information regarding this trip early next week.

Language

Our language focus this month will be integrated with social studies. The students are learning to do research, write jot notes based on their research and turn their jot notes into full sentences to communicate their ideas. We recently received a second letter from our pen pals from a grade two class in London, Ontario.  We will be writing back to the students later this week.  We recently completed another class novel study - The Witches by Roald Dahl. I am now introducing the students to a series called the Magic Tree House. I will continue reading novels from a variety of grade level chapter books throughout the remainder of the school year. I am thrilled with how interested the children are in listening to and reading books from a variety of genres on a daily basis.

Math

In math we are nearing the end of our unit on multiplication and division. There are many great IXL activities related to these topics, so please ensure that your child keeps up with the IXL assignments. Monitoring your child to ensure they are completing grade level units and to ensure you are available to explain any areas of difficulty is very important. Our next unit will focus on fractions. Please begin working through the IXL units on fractions to prepare your child for learning over the next couple of weeks.

Science

We are continuing to learn about Water and Air. We have been discussing ways we can conserve water and the students created detailed posters related to this topic. We have also investigated the Water Cycle including evaporation, condensation, precipitation and collection, We have a glass filled with water in our classroom and we have been monitoring how long it will take to evaporate. Every few days the children have been fascinated by how much the water level has changed due to evaporation. We also demonstrated the water cycle using a kettle, mirror and some paper towel to collect the drips of water.

Social Studies

In Social Studies we are learning about some countries around the world. The children are working in groups of three and are researching a country of their choice. All of the research will be done in class. The students will be learning about the land features, schools, family life, celebrations, food, sports and entertainment. Please feel free to send in any colour pictures for the parts of the project that your child is responsible for. Once the research is complete the students will display their findings on a poster board. There will be one poster board per group. The poster board will be provided by me. Next each student will make their own model, diorama or a mobile displaying what they have learned. I ask that you set aside a shoe box, in case your child wishes to do a diorama. More information will be sent home as we get closer to this stage of the project.

Please keep the evening of April 19th open as this will be a night for you to visit our classroom with your child. They will be able to show your around and share all of the many things we do on a daily basis. Hopefully our projects will be finished by they but if not you will be able to see them at various stages. More information should be coming to you soon.

As always, thank you again for your continued support with your child's learning. The students and I will look forward to sharing what we have learned at the LKS Open House!
