First Week Update

The first week of Grade Two was a great success! Hopefully all of you have taken some time to review the detailed letters that were sent home last week. I hope that I was able to address most of the questions you may have about how our classroom works. Thank you for taking the time to fill in valuable information regarding your child on the Student Information form.

I have been encouraging the children to bring their parent/caregivers by our classroom to show them around. This can be done before or after school. You will also have an opportunity to visit our classroom on Curriculum Night/Corn Roast which is this Tuesday September 10, 2019.

This month the Character Trait is Respect! We have been reading several books with themes relating to respect and we also created a classroom chart with our ideas about what Respect looks/sounds like.

Last week we also made a list of Classroom Agreements which will help to ensure our classroom is a safe, secure and happy place to learn. Each student signed the list of Agreements to show they have agreed to follow our Classroom Agreements.

If your chiId is interested in participating in Cross Country, the first practice will be on Tuesday, September 10th. Cross Country will be every Tuesday, Thursday at 8:15. Exercise is a great way for your child to start their day! I will be outside ever morning cheering the kids on as they are running around the Shale Pit.

In the next couple of weeks I will be sending home your son/daughter's login information for IXL and RAZ. I strongly encourage everyone to explore these wonderful learning tools.

We will begin our Spelling Program next Monday. The students will write these words in their planner and we will have a weekly spelling test on Fridays. Once the words have gone home, your child will be accountable for spelling these words correctly in their daily writing. Quite often children do very well on the weekly spelling test however the words may still be spelled incorrectly in their daily writing. Your child will be encouraged to use our Word Wall, Word Wiz Dictionaries and Word Cards to ensure these words are spelled correctly in their daily work.

In Social Studies we will begin to discuss Traditions and Celebrations. We will be starting with birthdays. We will be comparing how families celebrate birthdays in different ways. Traditions and Celebrations will be an on-going theme throughout the year.

In Math, we will be working on the hundreds chart and number lines. Later this month we will begin a unit on Data Management. The students will learn how to make graphs. Your child will work with a partner and came up with a question with four possible answers. Then they will survey the class and create a graph using the information from their survey.

In Language we will working on writing complete sentences.

We are looking forward to our Terry Fox Walk  at the end of the month. Just a reminder, everyone is welcome to join our walk.

May Update!

Hello Everyone,

Hopefully Spring is here to stay! Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. Hopefully the warm weather will settle in very soon.


It is hard to believe that another month has almost gone by. June is going to be another busy month.


I would like to welcome our new student, Charles, to our class.  The students were so excited to meet Charles on Tuesday and they have all been very helpful with helping him learn about our school and classroom rules and routines.

I hope all of you were surprised to receive your letters in the mail a few weeks ago. The students were thrilled to write the letters and to put them in the mailbox.  They were also very excited about their Mother's Day Painting and special Mother's Day writing.  I hope you enjoyed that too.


A highlight for May was our Media Project. The students made some amazing toys/machines. Their posters were very informative and their commercials were terrific! A job that was very well done by all of the students!  
Here is some of what we're doing this month.

* I sent home a permission letter today for our trip to the movie theater in June.
Please sign the form and pay online by Friday. Please remember to write down 
your payment confirmation number on the permission letter.

*Scholastic Book Orders are due on Friday May 31st

Language Arts

The students are beginning to study poetry. They will be learning about and writing different types of poetry over the next few weeks. This is always a very enjoyable and creative unit.  We will also be reading and discussion features of non-fiction texts.

Math

We have completed our units on time, temperature, calendar and fractions. We are working on a new unit on Measuring, Area, Perimeter. Please ensure that your child is completing the IXL activities on a consistent basis. It is a great way to reinforce what we have been learning in class. 

Science

We are continuing our unit about Growth and Changes in Animals. The students have been learning about the six classifications of animals and over the next few weeks. the students will be learning about the life cycles of a frog and the butterfly and a few other animals.

Social Studies 

We are continuing to learn about a variety of holidays and celebrations as they arise throughout each month. We will also be learning some simple mapping skills during the month of June.


Drama 

Our class has been working on 5 readers theatre plays. In the next few weeks your child may be asked to search for or make a few simple props for their play, We are hoping to perform the plays for each other and maybe for another class, at some point in the next couple of weeks. Some children have chosen to try to memorize their parts which is not an easy task and they are doing such a great job.

February News

Brrrrrr! Winter is definitely here! Glad we are finally having a break from the cold temperatures. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the cold/wet weather. Only when there is extreme cold weather (according to TDSB policy), will students be staying inside for recess and lunch breaks. I am recommending your child keep an extra pair of gloves and socks in their locker. They should also remember to keep a pair of indoor shoes at school.

Lunch – On cold or rainy days I am encouraging you to bring your child home for lunch, if at all possible. A change of scenery, and being in a quieter environment during the lunch hour will help your child recharge and be more focused for an afternoon of learning. 

Just a reminder that Report Cards will be going home on February 11th. I placed a note in your child's agenda last week indicating if I felt an interview was needed at this time. Any parent who still wishes to book an interview may do so on the online booking system www.schoolinterviews.ca  You will need to enter the event code qkv9w.  If for some reason you miss the booking deadline, write a note in your child's planner and we can book a time that is convenient for both of us.

During the next two weeks we will be discussing Ground Hog Day, Chinese New Year, Valentine's Day and the 100th day of school. This is a continuation of learning about celebrations and traditions as part of the Grade Two Social Studies Curriculum. The students will also be doing several reading, writing and art activities related to these celebrations throughout the month of February.

On Thursday February 14th, we will be celebrating Valentine's Day. Students who wish to bring in Valentine's cards or nut/peanut free treats are asked to bring in one for each child to avoid children feeling excluded. Please see the class list that was sent home today. The children are welcome to bring in their Valentine's beginning on February 11th.

In math, we will soon be completing our unit on 2D and 3D shapes. Our next unit will be focusing on multiplication. We will begin by discussing the relationship between repeated addition and multiplication. I encourage all students to learn some of their multiplication facts. This will give your child a head start into grade three. I would also like to stress the importance of your child memorizing the basic addition and subtraction facts to 20. Some children are very slow to arrive at the answers and are still relying on their fingers. Practice, practice, practice! Please continue to help your child keep up with the IXL units. For the most part, they are directly related to what we are doing in class, and help a lot! Congratulations to our class for receiving an IXL award for answering 15,000 questions on IXL! WOW! That's a lot of questions! Amazing!!!

In the month of February, please work on the following units on IXL: E16, E17, E18, E19, Y1, Y2, Y3, Y4, Y5, Y6,  

In Science, we have completed our unit on Liquids and Solids. Last week we had a fun morning of hands on experiments using different liquids and solids with the Scientist in the School. Thank you to (James's mom), Melanie (Lauren's mom) and Linda (Dexter's mom), who helped make the morning a great success! In a few weeks we will be introducing our next unit called Air and Water. 

In Art, we are continuing to focus on colours. Specifically: the colour wheel - primary and secondary colours, complimentary colours, colour tone and warm and cool colours.

Absences: Please let the office know if you will be taking your child out of school for any length of time.  Your child can always keep a journal of their travels and read daily. IXL and RAZ are also great if you have access to the internet.

Happy New Year! - January News

Happy New Year!

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday! I am looking forward to hearing about the students' holiday adventures! Best Wishes to you all as we enter 2019!

Thank you to everyone for my very generous gift card and Swell Travel Mug! Your kindness and generosity is very much appreciated!  I am looking forward to treating myself to something special in the New Year.

December was a very busy and exciting month both at school and at home. The children were all very excited to see that two of Santa's elves had come to visit us. The elves would fly back to the North Pole every night and report to Santa all of the wonderful things that were happening with the students in our class. The students looked forward to discovering them each morning in his tricky and amusing hiding spots.

Craft Day / Class Party - Thank you to everyone who contributed treats to our class party.  Thank you also to Melissa (Riley's mom), Anna (Matthew's mom), Catherine (Tabitha's mom), Mercedes (Sophia's mom) and Melanie (Lauren's mom) who organized some great holiday crafts! The children loved participating in this special morning.

Stonegate - Thank you to all of the families who contributed to our class Stonegate Family.  Your generosity helped make the holiday season special for another family. Teaching the students the benefits of giving to those less fortunate, is an important and lifelong lesson.

A big thank you to all of the volunteers who have continued to help in the classroom and at home in many different ways. The students greatly benefit from our teamwork.

Secret Santa

The students thoroughly enjoyed giving and receiving a new book from their Secret Santa.  Thank you to everyone who participated.  All of the children were so pleased and were very eager to read and share their new books.      

This month in Language we are diving right back into our routine of weekly spelling, grammar, journal writing and reading activities. We will be finishing our class novel, The BFG, during the next two weeks. We will then begin a whole class novel study based on a book written by Alexander McCall Smith called Akimbo and The Elephants.

During the next two weeks we will be working on Patterning in Math. Please review Sections D1-D6 on IXL to help your child consolidate their learning in this area.  We will also continue to work on addition and subtraction with and without regrouping.  We will be continuing to focus on increasing the speed and accuracy of basic facts to 20 through our daily One Minute Math drills.

Later on in January we will begin Measurement unit in Math. Throughout this unit, we will focus on measuring length,width and height using standard and non-standard units. Standard units include cm, m, while non-standard units include paper clips, cubes, fingers, feet, etc.

In Science we begin to work on our Liquids and Solids unit in January.

Media Literacy

We will be learning about the many different forms media. Please send in a few newspapers, magazines, travel brochures, menus, etc. We will be working in small groups and making a collage of different forms of Media.  Please send these in by Friday.

In Art we will be focusing on colours. Specifically: the colour wheel - primary and secondary colours, complimentary colours, colour tone and warm and cool colours.

Absences

Please let the office know if you will be taking you child out of school for any length of time in the New Year. Your child can always keep a journal of their travels and read daily.  IXL and RAZ are also great if you have access to the internet.

Reminders:
- Please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately for the weather.  Students that stay at school for lunch will definitely need to be well dressed, since they are outside for quite a long time.

- Students may want to have an extra pair of gloves/socks so that they don't have to put on wet ones after getting them wet at recess.

- All students will need to have a pair of indoor running shoes which are to be kept at school in their locker or to be taken to and from school in their backpack.

- Please remember to send a water bottle to be kept at school for the week.

October Review and November News

It's hard to believe another month has come to an end. The first two months of school have gone by very quickly. Thank you to all of the parents who have volunteered in a variety of ways during the month of October. The Halloween Craft Day and Halloween Party were all a great success. The students loved the crafts and I am quite sure they enjoyed bringing them home and sharing their accomplishments with you. I feel so lucky to have such a wonderful and supportive group of parents this year. The students in our classroom are greatly benefiting from you sharing your time, resources and expertise.

Remembrance Day Assembly is on Friday Nov. 9, starting at 10:30 am.  All are welcome to join us in the gym.  Please remember that this is a solemn assembly and we would ask that there be no clapping at any point.  Students who are in cubs, scouts, brownies, guides, etc. are welcome to wear their uniforms.

Next week, on November 15th we will be going to the Young People's Theatre to see Mary Poppins. I am taking one volunteer on the trip and our volunteer has been confirmed. If you were not selected to volunteer this time, there will be many other volunteer opportunities throughout the year for which we will need your support.

A few reminders as we head into the colder weather, Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather, especially if they stay for lunch.When we get into winter boot weather it will be important that students have a pair of indoor shoes that they keep at school. Putting an extra pair of socks in your child's backpack is also recommended.

Curriculum Outline

Here are some of the highlights from October and some of what is coming up in November.

Language Arts:

Last week all of the students presented their Halloween Poems last week.  Wow, they did such a great job!  Thank you for your support with helping your child memorize and rehearse their poems.  Many students added props and actions which made their poems quite entertaining.  Last month the students were very busy working on procedural writing, writing a fictional narrative as well as recounts about various events such as Thanksgiving and Halloween. The students enjoyed following the procedure for making pumpkin bread. The best part was tasting the warm and delicious bread as soon as it came out of the oven.  As we continue through November, the students will continue with their weekly journal entries on various topics, spelling , printing and grammar. We are continuing to focus on Capitals, Organization, Punctuation and Spelling.

I am thrilled to see that most students have logged into RAZ and have begun reading and completing various activities. I realize that some children would prefer to read their own books in the evening and that is fine with me. The main thing is that your child is reading books at their instructional level everyday. It is also important for you to spend time reading with your child. Choosing a bedtime story or reading aloud a chapter in a book each night is such a valuable bedtime routine.

Math

We are nearing the end of our second unit on Data Management.  Your child will benefit greatly by reviewing the following units on IXL - Data Management - Q1 to Q8.  IXL is a wonderful tool to reinforce and practice what your child is learning a school.  During the month of November and into December we will be focusing on Addition and Subtraction of 2 digit numbers, with and without regrouping.  I am encouraging your child to work through the following IXL units over the next month -  G1-G11 and H1-H9.  Reviewing addition and subtraction facts to 20 would also be beneficial.  We will be starting Minute Math later this month in hopes to improve your child's speed and accuracy of basic facts to 20.

Science

We are almost done our unit on Simple Machines. The children are looking forward to a morning of hands on activities with the Scientist in the School who will be coming on November 23rd.  We will be needing 4 parent volunteers to help us on this day.  Watch for the parent volunteer sign up email.

Social Studies

Our social studies unit on Traditions and Celebrations continues throughout this month and next. Our focus for November will be Diwali and Remembrance Day. The students will be completing a variety of reading, writing and art activities related these special celebrations. We are also creating a class book about Peace.  Each child will have an opportunity to bring the book home and share it with their family.  This week many students presented their Me Project. We have been enjoying learning more about our classmates.

SCARE Hunger Food Drive

A huge thank you to everyone who donated non-perishable food items to our annual SCARE Hunger Food Drive. This was a very successful year for the food drive and your contributions were big part of the success with this initiative

Terry Fox Donations

Another big thank you for all of your contributions to the Terry Fox Walk. Our school contributions are now over $20,000!  WOW!  The final total will be revealed at our celebration assembly later this month.


Report cards and Interviews – Progress reports will be going home on November 12th.  Interviews will be held next week.  If you have missed the on-line system booking opportunity, please write a note in your child's planner and I would be happy to schedule and interview at a mutually agreed upon time.  Interviews are scheduled in 10 minute blocks, so I kindly ask that you are on time.

September Update!

     Thank you to everyone who attended our Curriculum Night last Thursday evening. I hope you enjoyed looking around our classroom and seeing all of the wonderful work the children have been doing over the last couple of weeks. The students are very proud of their accomplishments so far in grade two. If you had another commitment and were not able to attend last Thursday, please feel free to drop by the classroom with your child and have a look around.

     Last week we read The Kindness Quilt by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace and discussed ways that we can show kindness both at school and at home through words and actions. The students shared their ideas of how they could show kindness to friends, siblings, parents, classmates, etc. We then created our own Kindness Quilt with paper. The students are very proud of the quilt we made which is displayed on one of the bulletin boards in our classroom.

     By now you all should have received your son/daughter's login information for IXL and RAZ. Hopefully everyone has had a chance to explore these wonderful learning tools. I recommend your child use the programs 2-3 times per week for 15 minutes each time. Please make sure you are monitoring your child while they are working on IXL. I am noticing that some children have not been attempting the Grade Two Units rather they have been working on the Grade One or Kindergarten Units. If left alone many children will choose the easy route. Please make sure they are using this resource to review what we are working on in the classroom.

During the next two weeks your child should work on the follow units on IXL:
- Counting and Number Patterns - A1-A12
- Comparing and Ordering  - B1, B3, B5

     We are now well into our spelling program. Once the words have gone home, your child will be accountable for spelling these words correctly in their daily writing.  Quite often children do very well on the weekly spelling test however the words may still be spelled incorrectly in their daily writing. Your child will be encouraged to use our Word Wall, Word Wiz Dictionaries and Word Cards to ensure these words are spelled correctly in their daily work.

     In Reading we are focusing on the reading strategies of making connections and predictions to assist with comprehension. Students are encouraged to make text to self, text to text and/or text to world connections as they are reading. The class will begin Guided Reading groups next month.
The students have begin working on reading short stories in class and answering a variety of comprehension and grammar questions in complete sentences, using words from the questions to begin the answer and including greater detail. We are working on remembering to begin sentences with a capital letter and to end sentences with appropriate punctuation.


     In Writing we will be working on a variety of short writing assignments based on Thanksgiving and Halloween. The students will learning to write recounts of various experiences, such as the Terry Fox walk and Thanksgiving. They will also be learning to write fictional narratives with a "Spooky" focus around Halloween, among other short Halloween writing activities.

     In Math, we have been counting by 2's, 5', 10's and 25's starting from different numbers up to 200.
We have also been counting backwards beginning at 50 by these numbers as well.  In addition, we have been working on representing and ordering numbers to 100.  Next week we will be introducing place value (hundreds, tens and ones).

     In Social Studies we began discussing Traditions and Celebrations. This will be an on-going theme throughout the year.

     In Science, we will be starting our Simple Machines unit this week.  The students will assess the impact on society and the environment of simple machines and mechanisms.  They will investigate mechanisms that include simple machines and enable movement.  The students will also demonstrate an understanding of movement and ways in which simple machines help to move objects and to make life easier.

     Mystery Reader will begin next month. The children love discovering who our weekly Mystery Reader is. I strongly encourage everyone to sign up for this!  Watch for information regarding this from our grade parents.  I am happy to accommodate your schedule to ensure each child is surprised by their parent, sibling or grandparent at least one time during the school year.

     We are looking forward to our Terry Fox Walk this Thursday afternoon. Just a reminder, everyone is welcome to join our walk.

Reminders:

- If your child is participating in the cross country practices on Tuesday and Thursday mornings,  please remember to send an extra pair of socks and running shoes as the field is often quite wet in the morning.

- Please remember to sign and return the trip form by October 3rd.  Please remember to write down the confirmation of payment number on the form as well.

- The students are being asked to wear orange on Friday. This day acknowledges the residential school system in Canada, honours those that survived, remembers those who did not, and recognizes the ongoing effects of intergenerational trauma. It is a day to demonstrate that all students matter!

September - First Week

     Last week we read one our favourite books, Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes. Each student was holding a paper heart. Each time Chrysanthemum was teased because of her name, we crumpled up the heart. Every time someone did something nice to her we tried to smooth it out. By the end of the story, the heart was very wrinkled and could not be smoothed. The students understood the connection that our own heart feels wrinkled and crumpled sometimes when we don't like what someone says. Words do hurt. We should always stop and think before we speak. It's hard to fix a wrinkled heart!

     This week we also made a list of Classroom Agreements which will help to ensure our classroom is a safe, secure and happy place to learn. Each student signed the Chart of Agreements to show they have agreed to follow our Classroom Agreements.

     Thank you for filling out the package of forms that were sent home last week. There are still a few outstanding. If you have not done so already, please return the signed forms before Friday.  Please remember to register for Cashless Schools so payment can be made for the agendas $8.00 and a gym shirt $20.00 (if ordered).  You will need to have a Cashless account in order to pay for pizza lunches and field trips as well. https://schoolcashonline.com

Agendas:  Students have started using their agendas on a daily basis. They will be recording important information throughout the week. It is their responsibility to show it to you every night, and ask that you sign it.  If you would like to write notes to me in the agenda, please do so on the right hand side of the page, keeping the left hand side for the students. Please remind your child to bring their planner to school everyday.

- All students require that their lockers have either a lock, which they are able to open

independently, or a carabineer clip on them.

week, and it will be brought home to be washed on the weekends

- Students should have healthy, peanut and tree nut-free snacks for both recess breaks.

- Please be sure to check all of your child’s snacks carefully, as well as anything

that you send into the school for class parties and/or birthdays.

Happy Spring! April News

February News

     The month of February has been very busy! We have learned about Groundhog Day, Valentine's Day, Olympics and Chinese New Year. We also celebrated the 100th day of School.

Language:

     The students were very excited to receive letters from their Pen Pals. They are grade two students from London, Ontario. The children were very eager to write back to their Pen Pals. They had a lot of fun finding comparisons and writing all about themselves.  Hopefully your child shared the letter they received with you.
     This month our language program has been integrated with our social studies program to include a variety of lessons, activities and read alouds related to Groundhog Day, Valentine's Day and Chinese New Year.
     We are also well into our second read aloud novel study: The Witches by Roald Dahl. The students are really enjoying this book and they are taking great care when working on the novel study.
       The students have been enjoying their second Readers Theatre Plays. They all worked very hard on reading with fluency and expression.  Each group had an opportunity to perform in front of their peers. All of the groups did a wonderful job!

Math:

Late October Update!

     Thank you to everyone who has brought in a donation for the We Scare Hunger food drive. The children are learning about helping others less fortunate and they are so proud to put their donations into the box outside our classroom.  Just a reminder, please don't send in any products which contain nuts.  The Food Drive continues until November 1, 2017.

     Over the next several weeks we will be working on number sense and numeration.  It is recommended that your child work on the following units on IXL - E1 to E12,  F1 to F7, H1 to H6 and L1 to L6 . It is recommended that you supervise your child when using IXL so you can see where your child has made mistakes and explain and help them understand where they have gone wrong.

      Picture Retake Day is on Wednesday November 1, 2017.  Please let me know if you wish a retake, so I can add your name to my list.  

     The grade 8's will be creating a Haunted House for the students to visit. It is usually recommended the students bring a $2.00 donation when entering the Haunted House as the grade 8's are raising money for their grade trip. Our class is scheduled to visit the Haunted House on Friday, October 27th. Your child does not have to visit the Haunted House if they are not comfortable doing so. They will have the option to stay outside in the hallway with Mrs. Champagne.

     Halloween is quickly approaching. This week we will be having a Halloween craft morning. The children are looking forward to making some crafts that they can use to decorate their home. The children may wear their costumes to school on Tuesday, October 31.  There will be a school parade for the parents at 9:00 am.  The parade will be outside weather permitting.  Our classroom party will be in the afternoon.  Just a reminder that face paint is easier to manage than a mask and please no weapons.  

     Finally, a reminder that Pizza Lunch is on Friday, October 27th. Please remind your child how to behave for the parent supervisors in our classroom. The students need to use inside voices, remain seated, use their manners and to clean up after themselves. I will be speaking to the students about these expectations but an extra reminder from home will be helpful too.

What to Expect in October

It's hard to believe that we are already into the first week of October. I'm sure everyone is looking forward to having a nice Thanksgiving long weekend!

A reminder that photo day is on Tuesday this week!

Thank you to everyone who attended our Curriculum Night last Thursday evening. I hope you enjoyed looking around our classroom and seeing all of the wonderful work the children have been doing over the last couple of weeks. The students are very proud of their accomplishments so far in grade two. If you had another commitment and were not able to attend last Thursday, please feel free to drop by the classroom with your child and have a look around.

On Thursday afternoon we enjoyed participating in out whole school Terry Fox Walk. Thank you to all of the parents who volunteered to walk with our class. Wow! What an amazing turn out!

Last week each child chose a classmate to interview and they also had to draw a portrait of their friend . This week they will present what they learned about their friend to the class. So far the students have done a wonderful job on this three part assignment.

Language Arts:
We are now into the routine of weekly spelling lists. Each week, the students complete a variety of activities in class based on the spelling words of the week. These may include sorting words by spelling rule, crosswords, fill in the blank, proofreading and short creative writing assignments. I will send home the spelling test book every couple of weeks so you can keep track of the words your child needs to work on.

Reading:
In reading we are focusing on the reading strategies of making connections and predictions to assist with comprehension. Students are encouraged to make text to self, text to text and/or text to world connections as they are reading. The class will begin weekly Guided Reading groups later this month.
The students will begin working on reading short stories in class and answering a variety of comprehension and grammar questions in complete sentences, using words from the questions to begin the answer and including greater detail. We are working on remembering to begin sentences with a capital letter and to end sentences with appropriate punctuation.

Writing:
Over the next couple of weeks we will be working on a variety of short writing assignments based on Thanksgiving and Halloween. The students will learning to write recounts of various experiences, such as the Terry Fox walk and Thanksgiving. They will also be learning to write fictional narratives with a "Spooky" focus around Halloween, amongst other short Halloween writing activities.

Math:

This week we will be completing our Math Unit on Sorting and Data Management (graphing). Weekly IXL practice based on what we have learned to date would be beneficial for all students.

I will send home information about our next math unit later this week.

Science:

We will be starting our Simple Machines unit this week. We will be having the Scientist in the School come in November for a morning/afternoon of hands-on activities related to this unit in Movement. We will need 4-5 volunteers for this amazing morning of learning! Stay tuned for a confirmation of the date and a request for volunteers.

Social Studies:

We are well underway with our first unit looking at Traditions and Celebrations. This month

we are focusing on Thanksgiving and Halloween.

Mystery Reader:

Mystery Reader will begin this month. The children love discovering who our weekly Mystery Reader is. I strongly encourage everyone to sign up for this!  I am happy to accommodate your schedule to ensure each child is surprised by their parent, sibling or grandparent at least one time during the school year.

     Last week we continued to talk about Respect. I read one my favourite books, Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes. Each student was holding a paper heart. Each time Chrysanthemum was teased because of her name, we crumpled up the heart. Every time someone did something nice to her we tried to smooth it out. By the end of the story, the heart was very wrinkled and could not be smoothed. The students got the connection that our own heart feels wrinkled and crumpled sometimes when we don't like what someone says. Words do hurt. We should always stop and think before we speak. It's hard to fix a wrinkled heart!

     Everyone should have received their IXL login information. During the next few weeks we will be focusing on.  Please have your child practice the following on IXL:

Data and Graphs

Q2, Q3, Q4, Q5, Q6, Q7, Q8, Q9

    Please also practice counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s to 200. Many students know how to count to 100, however, they need practice counting and writing numbers beyond 100.

     Please make sure you are monitoring your child while they are working on IXL. I am noticing that some children have not been attempting the Grade Two Units rather they have been working on the Grade One or Kindergarten Units. If left alone many children will choose the easy route. Please make sure they are using this resource to review what we are working on in the classroom.

Grade 1-3 Cross-Country

Cross-Country begins on Tuesday September 19th. Running is a great way to start the day. I am encouraging all children to take part. I will be there too! The practices will be every Tuesday and Thursday morning at 8:15. Remember to sign the form and send it with your child at the first practice. There will be a bin to put the form in.

First Week Update

The first week of Grade Two was a great success! Hopefully all of you have taken some time to review the detailed letters that were sent home last week. I hope that I was able to address most of the questions you may have about how our classroom works. I have been encouraging the children to bring their parent/caregivers by our classroom to show them around. This can be done before or after school. You will also have an opportunity to visit our classroom at Curriculum Night which is this Thursday September 28, 2017.

This month the Character Trait is Respect! We have been reading several books with themes relating to respect and we also created a classroom chart with our ideas about what Respect looks/sounds like.

This week we also made a list of Classroom Agreements which will help to ensure our classroom is a safe, secure and happy place to learn. Each student signed the Chart of Agreements to show they have agreed to follow our Classroom Agreements.

If your chiId is interested in participating in Cross Country, the first practice will be on Tuesday, September 19th.  Cross Country will be every Tuesday, Thursday at 8:15. Exercise is a great way for your child to start their day!

Thank you for filling in all of those forms that were sent home last week. There are still a couple outstanding. If you have time this week, I would greatly appreciate it if you could take a look at them if you have not done so already and sign and return them as soon as possible.

This week you all received your son/daughter's login information for IXL and RAZ. Hopefully everyone has had a chance to explore these wonderful learning tools. I recommend your child use the programs 2-3 times per week for 15 minutes each time.


We began our Spelling Program this week. The students have written these words in their planner and we will have a spelling test on Friday. Once the words have gone home, your child will be accountable for spelling these words correctly in their daily writing. In a couple of weeks I will also be adding 3-5 "NoExcuse" words to the list each week. These words are from a list of words of high frequency words that your child is expected to know by the end of grade two. Quite often children do very well on the weekly spelling test however the words may still be spelled incorrectly in their daily writing. Your child will be encouraged to use our Word Wall, Word Wiz Dictionaries and Word Cards to ensure these words are spelled correctly in their daily work.

Scholastic book orders are due on September, 18, 2017.

In Social Studies we began discussing Traditions and Celebrations. We have start with birthdays. It has been fun learning about how families celebrate birthdays in different ways. Traditions and Celebrations will be an on-going theme throughout the year.

In Math, we have been working on the hundreds chart and number lines. This month we will begin a unit on Data Management . The students will learn how to make a graphs. Your child will work with a partner and came up with a question with four possible answers. Then they will survey the class and create a graph using the information from their survey.

In Language we will working on answering comprehension questions using complete sentences both orally and in the written form.


We are looking forward to our Terry Fox Walk  at the end of the month. Just a reminder, everyone is welcome to join our walk.

Hello Everyone,

Hopefully Spring is here to stay! Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. Hopefully the warm weather will settle in very soon.

It is hard to believe that another month has almost gone by. June is going to be another busy month.

I would like to welcome our new student, Charles to our class.  The students were so excited to meet Charles on Tuesday and they have all been very helpful with helping him learn our school and classroom rules and routines.

I hope all of you were surprised to receive your letters in the mail. The students were thrilled to write the letters and to put them in the mailbox.  They were also very excited about their Mother's Day Painting and special Mother's Day writing.  I hope you enjoyed that too.



Here is some of what we're doing this week and into June.

Language Arts

The students are beginning to study poetry. They will be learning about and writing different types of poetry over the next few weeks. This is always a very enjoyable and creative unit. 

Math

We have completed our units on time, temperature, calendar and fractions. We are working on a new on Measurement, Area, Perimeter. Please ensure that your child is completing the IXL activities on a weekly basis. It is a great way to reinforce what we have been learning in class. 

Science

We are continuing our unit about Growth and Change in Animals. The students have been learning about the six classifications of animals and over the next  few weeks the students we will be learning about the life cycles of a frog and the butterfly and a few other animals.

February News

     The first week of February has been very busy! We have learned about Groundhog Day, Chinese New Year and today we had a fun skating trip to the MasterCard Centre. Thank you to the many parents who drove students and to other parents who joined in for the fun.

     Just a reminder that report cards will be coming home on Monday February 13^th. I have already requested interviews with some parents.  Notes were sent home last week suggesting whether or not i fest an interview was necessary.  Of course, I am more than happy to meet with any parent who wishes to discuss their child’s progress. Please book your interview on the School Bookings website by Wednesday February 8^th. If for some reason you miss the booking deadline, just write a note in your child’s planner and we can arrange a time that is convenient for both of us.

     The students have decorated their Valentine Bags and can start to bring in their Valentines anytime this week. A list of students names was sent home at the beginning of the week. If your child chooses to give out Valentines, please make sure they make one for everyone in the class as we would not want anyone to feel excluded. We will be having a small party to celebrate Valentine's Day on the 14th. We will have some special (peanut/nut free) snacks and have an opportunity to open up the cards from our friends.

Language:

     The students are excited about learning cursive writing. We will be learning two letters each week.
It is amazing to see how hard they concentrate and how quiet they are during cursive writing periods.

     This month our language program will be integrated with our social studies program to include a variety of lessons, activities and read alouds related to Groundhog Day, Valentine's Day and Black History month.

Math:

     In math we are just beginning our unit on multiplication and division.  This week we will be discussing the relationship between repeated addition and multiplication. I encourage all students to learn their multiplication facts. I would also like to stress the importance of your child memorizing the basic addition and subtraction facts to 20. Practice, practice, practice! Please continue to help your child keep up with the IXL assignments. For the most part, they are directly related to what we are doing in class, and help a lot! Congratulations to our class for receiving an IXL award for answering 20,000 questions on IXL! WOW! That's a lot of questions! Amazing!!!

Social Studies:

     Gung Hay Fat Choy! The students loved learning about Chinese New Year last month. We read many stories, made some beautiful crafts and watched a few interesting videos. They really enjoyed seeing the dragon dance and the lion dance. They also liked learning about the history of the zodiac. Each of the children also received a lucky red envelope 'Lai see'.

     This month, we will shift our focus to Groundhog Day, Valentine's Day, Family Day and Black History month.

     The grade two students will be beginning their own inquiry based projects later this month. The projects will be related to our Social Studies unit, People and Environments - Global Communities. Inquiry-based learning starts by posing questions and this is how we will be starting this unit. The questions will be posted on a "Wonder" chart in our classroom. From there, we will progress through Inquiry process. The students will be grouped together based on their questions and interests.


Science:

     In Science we will be starting our Growth and Change in Animals unit very soon.

     We had the opportunity to visit the intermediate science fair last week. All of the projects were inquiry based. Each student had a chance to look at several projects and listen to a few student presentations. After we returned to our classroom we discussed some of the questions that guided the investigations we had viewed. This was a good way to introduce the students to the inquiry process and get them thinking about how a simple question can guide an in-depth investigation.

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday! It's great to be back and it has been a pleasure hearing about the students' holiday adventures! Best Wishes to you all as we enter 2017!

Last week the students thoroughly enjoyed making their Time Capsules. Please put it away and have your child wait at least one year to open it up. I have told the children the longer they wait to open it the more fun it will be to look inside. The students also completed a New Year Flip Book and added some paper folding and cutting art for decorations. They are hanging outside the classroom so come by and have a look. The children were very creative with their designs.

This month in Language we are diving right back into our routine of weekly spelling, grammar, journal writing and reading activities. The students will begin cursive writing this month! They are very excited to start.



In Science were are continuing to work on our Air and Water unit in January.

This month in Art we will be focusing on colours. Specifically: the colour wheel - primary and secondary colours, complimentary colours, colour tone and warm and cool colours.

Important Reminders

Concert

The grades 1-5 concert will be on Wednesday December 14^th. The show is called Pirates of Pinataville. The children are expected to arrive in their classrooms, wearing their costumes at 5:30 p.m. The grade 2’s are wearing black bottoms (pants, skirt or tights) and a solid bright coloured shirts (no logos, patterns, numbers or words).

 
Secret Santa

The children may begin to bring in their gifts (Under $10) for their secret recipient. We will be exchanging the gifts at our class party on December 22, 2016.

Stonegate Family
Our laundry basket has arrived. Just a reminder that all donations are due by Friday December 16^th. Please contact the grade parents if you need additional information.  An email has been sent out with information regarding the needs of the family as well as sign up opportunities. This is a wonderful way to help another family during holiday season. It also connects with our Character Trait of Kindness and Caring. Donations are not to be wrapped. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

December Update!

December is a very busy and exciting month both at school and at home. Last Friday we were all excited to see that one of Santa's elves had come to visit us. Apparently his flies back to the North Pole every night and reports to Santa all of the wonderful things that our happening with the students in our class. We are looking forward to discovering him in his tricky and amusing hiding spots each day when we come to school,

Famous People Players
On Wednesday the Grade Two classes will be going to see Tree-Mendous, a medley of holiday vignettes with fun, up-beat music. Once again we had several parents wanting to volunteer but we are only able to bring two parent volunteers per class. Catherine (Porter's mom) and Kelly Chan      (Ayden's mom) have been chosen to join us on this trip. It is important to note that Famous People Players is a theatre group dedicated to the integration of people who have developmental disabilities. I will be talking to the students about this before we leave on Wednesday so that there are no surprises.

Secret Santa
Last Thursday I sent home a note regarding Secret Santa. Each of the students selected the name of the student they are buying for. Your child may bring in their gift beginning Dec 12th and up to Dec 21st, but don't let anyone see you putting it under our small tree. Remember to write only the recipients name on the gift. If your child will be away for Secret Santa, please let me know. We will have to make other arrangements to avoid any disappointments for the children.

Reading Buddies
Last week your child was partnered up with 1-2 grade eight student/s who will be their Reading Buddy for the remainder of the school year. We will have Reading Buddies every other week on Day 5-Period 5 in the afternoon.

Absences
Please let the office know if you will be taking you child out of school for any length of time before or after the break. Your child can always keep a journal of their travels and read daily. IXL and RAZ are also great if you have access to the internet.

Curriculum Outline for December

Language Arts
The students will be working on a variety of reading and writing activities based on the winter holidays that are celebrated this month. We have already written and mailed our letters to Santa. We are keeping our fingers crossed that we get a response before the Christmas holiday begins. We have our Christmas Wish list posted on our classroom door for anyone who wants to come by to have a look.

Math
We will be continuing our unit on 2D and 3D Geometry throughout the month of December. Our goals is to complete the unit by the end of this month.

Science
This week we will be starting our unit on Air and Water.

Social Studies
The students will be learning about various winter celebrations, including Hanukkah, Eid,
Kwanzaa and Christmas. We will also be learning about how Christmas is celebrated around the world.

Media Literacy
We have be learning about the many different forms media. Please send in a few newspapers, magazines, travel brochures, menus, etc. We will be working in small groups at the end of the week and making a collage of different forms of Media.
